Rural Scenes

On the way to Trawas last week we got out of the city and drove through relatively sparsely populated areas dedicated to agriculture. The primary crop I saw was rice, often in terraced padis.

Some of the padis were quite beautiful.

Even the cows look different from those in the Midwest. They're mostly work animals that help in the fields, so not much meat on any of them.

We stopped at a fruit stand to buy bananas, oranges, and fried snacks. Here's the woman who sold me my bananas.

Pak Adi and Ibu Marya bought avacados too.

It felt great to get out into the countryside and to glimpse another side of life here in Eastern Java. Even though the crops and methods are different I was still reminded of the corn and soybean fields in central Indiana and felt a bit homesick.
